Memory Mobile

Making a memory mobile is a fun and educational family craft. A memory mobile can display family pictures, helping children to understand their family relations and where they fit in the family. Your family tree is the basis for your memory mobile, therefore the mobile can be as large as the information you have on hand.

Further research of your family tree will help the whole family discover if their last name is based on a profession, or if the family name has changed when ancestors came to this country. The memory mobile can be used to display your family history, a special family vacation or other special family event.

Materials:

• Colored poster board or construction paper, one color for each branch of the tree
• Individual photos of family members
• Twigs or dowels: One 10”, one 16”, two 8”, and four 5”
• String
• Glue

Memory Mobile Instructions:

• Cut a 3” square of one color, two 2.5” squares of another color, four 2.5” squares of another color and eight 2” squares of the last color.
• Cut photos of family members a half inch smaller than the colored squares. Center the photos and glue in place.
• Poke a small hole 1/8” from the top and bottom of each square.
• Lay out twigs/dowels in rows, largest to smallest
• Position the photo squares with mom’s side of the family on one side and dad’s on the other. Arrange each couple with the men and women each on their own side.
• Cut 22, 6” long pieces of string. Thread one piece through each of the holes in the photo squares. Tie to the twigs above and below each square. Hold up the mobile and adjust the photos until it balances.
• Cut a 24” long piece of string and tie the ends to the top twig, then hang.

What you need:

• Rinsed out juice box
• Construction paper or scrap paper
• Tape or glue
• Wiggle Eyes
• Yarn, glitter, pipe cleaners (or juice box straws), glitter, etc.

How to make Juice Box Buddies:

1. Wrap empty juice box with construction paper
2. Cut strips into black piece of construction paper to make hair (yarn may also be used for the same purpose).
3. Glue hair to top of juice box.
4. Glue wiggle eyes and mouth to front of box. Add pipe cleaner arms and legs if you like.

Puppet Making

What you need for this craft project:
·    3 cups
·    4 lengths of string or yarn
·    Control stick – old ruler, twig from outdoors, curtain rod, etc.
Decorating materials: wiggle eyes, markers, glitter glue, sequins, stickers, pom poms, etc

How to make the string puppet:
1.    Head cup: poke holes ¼” from the top edge of a cup. Run one string through the inside of the cup as shown.
2.    Feet cups: attach one string to the inside of each of the 2 feet cups as shown.
3.    Tie the strings from the head cup to the control stick. Poke 2 holes in the bottom of the head cup to attach the feet cups to.

1. For each strand of pompoms, double-knot the end of a 5½-foot length of clear fishing line.
2. Use a darning needle to thread one to three pompoms at a time. Leave 2 to 3 inches of line between each cluster and make a single knot below each cluster to hold the pompoms in place. Leave the last 6 inches of clear fishing line empty.
3. Tie each strand to a tension rod, trim any excess line, and use clear tape to secure the strands.
4. Expand the tension rod to fit the doorway of your child’s room.

Butterfly Decor

What you need for the coffee filter crafts:

• Paper coffee filter
• 1/2 black pipe cleaner stem
• Water color paints
• Paint brush and water

How to make butterfly coffee filter crafts:

1. Flatten the coffee filter and place it on a plate or newspaper to paint as the water will soak through. Set aside on paper towels to dry.
2. Fold the coffee filter accordion style, with 1/2″ pleats.
3. Fold the pipe cleaner in half and twist the stem around the filter to secure it in place.
4. Bend the tips of the pipe clean stems over about 1/4″ to create the antennae.
5. Fan out the butterfly wings.
6. If desired, hand with yarn or fishing line.
